Reeds.
Ease.
Response is the first quality I assess in a reed. If the reed does not respond, it will only get in the way. I make and play on “medium-soft” reeds. I use the Innoledy gouge with a Mack+ shape.
Stability.
It is so important that we always play in tune with ourselves and in tune with others. A great reed’s intonation is always reliable. I make American, long scrape reeds that peep a C and crow a C-sharp.
Balance.
Our tone is a personal, unique part of what defines us as oboists. Your reeds should always compliment your instrument and the tone you are trying to achieve. I believe aspects of a great tone (and reed) include warmth, resonance, and depth.
